Flowers are part of everyday life in Thailand. They are intricately woven into the tapestry of rituals found in society, from grand traditional events down to intimate personal offerings. They have a special place in Buddhism practiced here in Thailand and one can see flowers present in many forms within temples. Thais will often set simple flower arrangements on spirit houses or hang floral tassels in their automobiles. Pak Khlong Market is a testament to their importance but attention to the flowers and its place in culture seems to be diminishing in modern life. The Museum of Floral Culture, set up in 2012, is great reminder of the significance of these gifts of nature in history and culture.
Sakul Intakul, a floral artist and florist to the palace, created The Museum of Floral Culture in the Dusit District. The building itself is a feature – a century old teak mansion with colonial influences. Starting outside, a carefully curated and manicured garden serves as a living exhibit of Thai flowers with a pavilion as a centerpiece. Inside the mansion, five sections bring you closer to the story of flowers: Dusit Gallery lets visitors have a look at some photographs of flowers from the National Archives, World of Floral Culture touches upon floral culture in six other Asian countries, Temples of Flowers explores the natural ecosystems where flowers thrive, Heritage of Thai Flower Culture explains floral culture in Thailand, and Pen, Pencil, and Possibility features various works by the founder himself. The museum offers guided tours in English and Thai, while Japanese is only available on Wednesdays. A request for a tour by the founder is also possible.
A visit in the afternoon to The Museum of Floral Culture is highly recommended as one can relax in the elegant balcony of Dok Mai Thai Salon Du Thé for afternoon tea and view the verdant and vividly colored tropical garden. On the second Saturday of every month, special workshops open to the general public are held for more hands-on experience with the flora.
