The newest park of trees and shrubs to pop-up in Bangkok hovers over the bustling Chao Phraya River: ferries, barges and leisure-craft traveling north and south underneath.

The greening project utilizes an incomplete electric railway bridge that which was abandoned more than 30 years ago.

Often referred to as “Saphan-Duan” (unfinished-bridge), the project to create a garden on the ghost structure was seized upon by UDDC, urban planners spearheading BANGKOK250, a project to improve the city’s livability by 2050. The UDDC strategic plan for BANGKOK250 encourages government agencies, private companies and community groups to work together to create benefits for the public.

You can reach the garden bridge by taking a ferry to Pier 6, where you would also alight for Bangkok’s flower market, Pak Klong Talad. Whether in the early morning of evening sunset, it’s a great vantage point from which to explore and photograph the neighbourhoods on both sides of the Chao Phraya River.
