The newly opened gallery Shibui at River City, Bangkok specialises in modern and contemporary Japanese ceramics. The owner, John Wright has collected Japanese ceramics for years, and his collection now forms the basis of the new gallery.
Modern Japanese ceramics have evolved from the older traditions of pottery, which are still revered. Modern elements of design have brought a refinement and a new perspective to the older glazes and shapes to maintain aesthetically pleasing objects, which can blend with both antique and modern settings.
Many of the works featured are by designated National Living Treasures of Japan and other prominent contemporary artists whose works are held in major private collections and displayed in national museums of modern art, including the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. Artists featured are Hamada Shoji, Shimaoka Tatsuzo, Kishimoto Kenin, Nishihata Tadashi, amongst others.
The introduction sales exhibition will take place on 15 – 27 May at River City, 4th floor #409 – 410
