Okurimono is a gift on a special occasion where "giving" is an aesthetic that shows care and respect for the recipient.

The Japan Foundation, Bangkok and Creative Economy Promotion Agency (Public Organization) CEA presents the Okurimono: Aesthetic of Giving and Returning Exhibition, The Beauty of Exchanging Gifts in Japan: The Spirit of Gifting: Giving Shape to One’s Thoughts and Emotions.

The exhibition will showcase 98 pieces from pre-18th century until present. Selected by Nakasaki Iwao, curator and director of the Kyoritsu Women’s University Museum. It shows visitors the thoughts and philosophies of the Japanese people who are behind the pieces, so visitors can participate and understand the thinking behind the gift givers. The displays are divided into four parts:

Chapter 1: Various Gifts related to Weddings

Chapter 2: The Heart and Art of Gift-wrapping Fukusa and Furoshiki

Chapter 3: Gifts from Parents to Children

Chapter 4: Exchanging Gifts to Strengthen Bonds
